Hardware manufacturers are facing a considerable challenge as more organizations move to the cloud for their IT solutions. The recent purchase of IBM’s x86 server business by Lenovo for $2.3 billion is a clear indication of where this sector of the industry is moving, forcing hardware vendors to find new streams of revenue. But finding revenue streams from existing customers can be a very dangerous proposition for companies. If it is not implemented properly, it can result in the loss of valuable customers, or at the very least have them looking for better alternatives. Taking such a risk is HP, who, as of February 19th, will be making some server operators pay extra to get firmware updates if they don’t have an active warranty or contract.
